Enterprise Network Installation: Cabling, VLANs and Wireless Coverage

When the network slows down, everyone blames the application. Most of the time the problem is in cabling and coverage that was never measured.

The quality of the installation is determined by a single factor: measurement before and after. Layer 1 — Structured cabling

Cabling is the longest-lived component of a network; active devices are replaced every five years while cabling stays in place for fifteen. It is therefore chosen for the next decade's needs, not today's.

Whether existing cabling is adequate is determined not by estimation but by measurement with a certification tester. If the result is adequate, replacement should not be recommended; only segments that genuinely create bottlenecks are changed.

Layer 2 — Switching and redundancy

A managed switch is not distinguished from an unmanaged device only by price; segmentation, prioritisation and fault diagnosis are only possible with managed devices.

In critical environments, backbone-level redundancy is planned so that a single switch failure does not bring down the whole network. The cost of this is compared against the hourly cost of an outage before the decision is made.

Layer 3 — VLAN segmentation

When all devices share a single network segment, two problems grow together: broadcast traffic slows everyone down, and malware from one device can spread freely across the entire network.

Segmentation separates office, production, medical device, camera and guest networks from one another. Traffic between them is governed by access control lists. This is one of the highest-return security improvements that can be made without additional hardware.

Layer 4 — Wireless coverage

The most common wireless mistake is distributing access points at equal intervals across a floor. Metal racks, concrete walls and high ceilings affect signal in unpredictable ways.

The correct approach is to run a pre-installation coverage survey to produce a signal map, place access points according to that map, and verify the result with a second measurement after installation. In warehouses and production floors, roaming settings are also configured so devices do not drop connection when moving between access points.

Labelling: hours saved at fault time

An unlabelled patch panel at fault time means hours spent working out which cable goes where. Labelling is not a cosmetic finish to an installation; it is an investment that reduces maintenance cost.

The delivery package must include a schema matching socket, patch panel and port numbers. Every intervention made without that schema requires rediscovery work.

When installation is complete, the following documents must remain with the organisation:

  • Network topology diagram
  • VLAN and addressing plan
  • Patch panel and socket label schema
  • Pre- and post-installation wireless coverage measurement report
  • Device configuration backups
